------------------------------------------------------------------- Conflict Management E-Newsletter August 2000 #7 -------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to the seventh issue of the Conflict Management E-Newsletter. And thank you for making the shift to E-Groups. It certainly makes it easy for me to distribute the newsletter.
I am not sure if there is a focus this month: a little on this and a little on that. Josefina Rendon's article is well worth the read, and I hope that some of you will explore the article about 'Fire Management'.

When You Can't Get Through To Them: Cultural Diversity In Mediation By Josefina Muñiz Rendón Mediating without some cultural diversity competence, may result in substandard mediation services. One author has even suggested that mediating while lacking cultural diversity competence borders on the unethical. On the other hand, once the mediator recognizes cultural differences and learns how to address them, a completely new and bigger tool box becomes available to the mediator. http://www.mediate.com/articles/rendon.cfm
Where There's Smoke It Helps to Have a Smoke Jumper by Anna Muoio This article appeared in Fast Company (Issue 33) and is for everyone interested in FIRE as a metaphor for conflict and conflict management. It's inclusion is inspired by the presentation made at the ABA's dispute resolution conference earlier this year: "Smoke Detectors, Not Fire Alarms: Designing Corporate Conflict Management Systems" By Constantino, Hasson, Rosen, Bedman
"If you spend too much of your time "putting out fires," then take some advice from master smoke jumper Wayne Williams. He'll teach you how to think clearly, to act decisively, to work precisely -- and to solve problems before they burn out of control." http://www.fastcompany.com/online/33/smoke.html

Shootings Strain Cape Mediation Mediation between warring factions in the continuing conflict between taxi associations and the Golden Arrow Bus Company in Khayelitsha has come under increased strain because of the shooting of two more bus drivers this week. Yesterday, the first of a number of working groups, set as part of the mediation process, returned to discuss their proposals, which have not yet been made available to the media. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 6. New Book
Mobbing: Emotional Abuse in the American Workplace by Davenport, Schwartz, and Elliott
Mobbing can be compared to bullying at the workplace. Mobbing denotes, however, more specifically a "ganging up" by co-workers, subordinates or superiors, to force someone out of the workplace through rumor, innuendo, intimidation, discrediting, isolation, and particularly, humiliation. They intentionally target-and ultimately destroy- innocent individuals who are trying to do their work well and with dignity. Victims are attacked or undermined- often with approval by higher management.
The book helps readers to understand what mobbing is, why it occurs, how it affects a victim, how organizations are impacted and what people can do-as a victim, a family member, a friend, or as a manager. It also encourages the legal community to rethink the current laws as they do not provide sufficient protection for this type of serious and widespread workplace injury.
