The Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Commerce will host a workshop in early June 2000 to explore the use of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms for consumer transactions in the borderless online marketplace. The workshop aims to begin an open discussion of how alternative dispute resolution programs may contribute to fostering consumer confidence without unnecessarily burdening business, and to examine the use of ADR as one means of providing transparent, effective, quick and inexpensive redress for consumers engaging in online transactions. http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2000/02/adrrev.htm

Southern African leaders led by President Thabo Mbeki have offered Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe a face-saving exit from the crisis gripping his country - but only in exchange for a promise to hold elections and end the anarchy on white-owned farms. In exchange for Mugabe agreeing to their demands, the southern African leaders publicly commended the Zimbabwean leader and undertook to support an orderly program of land reform sponsored by the British government. The sources said Mbeki had also asked Mugabe to stop attacking Britain in public. Sunday Independent, 20000423
---------------------------------------------------------------------- 6. Quotes
"You can't have e-cops and e-courts enforcing e-decisions because people can disappear. In the real world, you can put somebody in jail, but online you can change everything you'll be identified by; ADR is the only option."
Colin Rule General Manager, Online Mediators Quoted in an article by Auctionwatch.com http://www.auctionwatch.com/awdaily/features/neutral/index.html
"Online ADR will not duplicate the face-to-face environment. Rather, it should focus on using the network in ways that maximize the power of technology, power that may even be missing in face-to-face encounters."
Ethan Katsh Co-Director, Center for Information Technology and Dispute Resolution P6 of the ABA's Winter 2000 DR Magazine
